A plan to draft in thousands of homeless people from across America to rig a county election went depressingly wrong (they ended up drugging and then dumping a whole load of them). The bombing of a Rajneesh hotel prompted the sannyasins to get armed and establish their own law enforcement. Rajneeshpuram got bigger, tensions got worse. Instead, the Rajneeshees took over the town and installed a sannyasan as mayor. Very quickly, there were tensions with the people of Antelope, who weren't comfortable with free love or the idea of their small town being taken over by strangers.Īntelope tried to hold a vote to 'disincorporate itself' but by then there were way too many sannyasins, so it failed. He was personally very fond of 'stuff' and amassed more than 90 Rolls-Royce cars. He also combined Eastern teachings with a Western consumerist outlook. Rajneesh's philosophy incorporated meditation but also a very relaxed attitude to sex. The Rajneeshees wore distinctive orange (and later red, pink and purple) robes so were very easy to identify, particularly en masse.
In Antelope, their settlement was known as Rajneeshpuram and was intended as a self-governing state where followers could live as a separate community and practice the Bhagwan's teachings. His followers were called sannyasins (meaning 'disciples' in Sanskrit) or Rajneeshees. The cult followed a spiritual leader called Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. In the 1980s, a very large cult, which originated in India but attracted mostly wealthy white Westerners, moved to a small town in Oregon called Antelope and set up a commune.
